The idea of "monitoring your industry" sounds like a full-time job, and manually it basically is — someone checking multiple sources throughout the day, most of which turn up nothing. An always-on automation does the checking part continuously and only surfaces something when there's actually a reason to, which is the difference between a system you'll maintain and one you'll abandon within a month.
The shape of an always-on monitor
Unlike a one-off automation built for a single format, a monitoring workflow's job is narrower and more disciplined: watch continuously, act rarely. The structure:
- A timer trigger on a realistic interval — hourly for most industries, tighter only for genuinely fast-moving ones (see Trigger timing recipes).
- One or more HTTP Request nodes, each pointed at a source worth watching — an industry news feed, a competitor's public updates, anything that returns fresh items on a schedule.
- An If node doing the real work — the filter is what keeps this sustainable, and it's worth spending more time tuning than any other part of the workflow (patterns in If node branching recipes).
- A drafting step (Custom Agent) that only runs on the rare item that clears the filter, not on everything the sources return.
Why the filter, not the poll, is the real engineering problem
It's tempting to think the hard part of "always-on monitoring" is the always-on part — keeping a trigger running reliably. It isn't; a timer trigger just runs. The actual hard part is writing a filter precise enough that the workflow surfaces things worth your attention without either flooding you with noise or staying silent through something you'd have wanted to catch.
Get the filter too loose, and every run drafts something, most of it not actually worth posting — you'll stop trusting the workflow within a week. Get it too tight, and genuine opportunities pass through unflagged. The fix is iterative: start looser than feels right, watch what comes through for a week, and tighten based on what you'd have actually wanted to see versus what you didn't.
Watching more than one source without the noise multiplying
Most real monitoring needs more than one source — a news feed and a competitor's updates and an industry forum, say. Each additional HTTP Request node is easy to add; the discipline is making sure your filter logic scales with them rather than just multiplying the volume of unfiltered items reaching the drafting step. A relevance condition tuned for one source often needs adjusting per source — a competitor's own announcements are relevant by definition, while a broad news feed needs the tighter keyword-and-recency check.
What to do with something that clears the filter
Once an item passes the relevance and recency check, the rest of the pipeline is the same pattern as any other automated post: a Custom Agent node drafts a take, an Apply Template node binds it into your format, and — critically for a monitoring workflow specifically — a review step before anything publishes. Maintaining it over time
A monitoring automation isn't "set and forget" in the way a weekly recap post is — sources change, and what counted as relevant six months ago might not now. Revisit the filter roughly monthly: pull up everything that cleared it recently, and ask honestly whether each one was actually worth a post. Tighten or loosen from there.
